Keeping and maintaining fish in a suitable environment has been a popular pastime throughout history. When glass was first introduced, almost 2000 years ago, the modern aquarium was born and people have loved to keep fish and maintain whole aquatic ecosystems ever since. Many people choose to start simply with a small tank and a few easy to maintain fish but there is something compelling about watching fish interact and more often than not the knowledge and experience gained leads to further keen activity down the Aquatic Shops. Presented here are a selection of Aquatic shops who are on hand to provide all the advice, services and products to help you start your aquatic system, maintain and supplement your existing aquarium, or delve deeper into fish and aquatic ecosystem technology.
The different technology and systems involved in keeping fish, particularly tropical fish, can seem daunting at first. However there are a few simple basics which apply to most tanks and aquariums. The first thing required is a filtration system to keep the water clear and the fish healthy. Aquatic shops will advise you.
Basically you need a pump to pump water through a filter and then back into the tank. There are mechanical filters, chemical filters and biological filters and some filtration systems combine more than one method. The biggest problem is the build up of nitrogen in the water from fish waste products and for those who are keen to create a working natural ecosystem there are plants and microbes which can naturally filter the nitrogen products.
The next thing required for most aquariums is a temperature regulation system. This is a heater, for tropical fish, and a thermostat which controls the temperature level. The water temperature can be assessed simply by any one of a range of thermometers available for the purpose. Other popular technological additions include an air pump to create bubbles and maintain a good oxygen level in the water, and wave making devices can also be incorporated for fish that require them available in most Aquatic shops.
Essential additions to any aquarium are a light source, both for the fish and so you can see them in all their glory, and a lid for the tank, to help maintain temperature, stop any fish jumping out and stop any other animal jumping in!
So, once you have the basics you need simply to decide on the right aquarium and the right inhabitants. Aquariums come in all shapes and sizes. Traditionally rectangular cubed, modern technology in perspex and reinforced glass means a wide array of sizes and styles. A fish tank full of water is very heavy so you have to be aware of where the tank will be placed and if it will support the weight. You should also be aware that chlorinated tap water can have detrimental effects on both the fish and the filtration system.
In terms of the fish it is purely a matter of choice. Many people choose tropical fish and they come in bright colours and different sizes. Different fish can also inhabit different areas within the tank which is good for the ecosystem of the tank as well as easy on the eyes.
The Aquatic Shops presented here will be happy to discuss your requirements, whether for indoor, outdoor, freshwater or sea water fish. Many Aquatic shops also stock a range of amphibians and reptiles and suitable vivariums in which to keep them. Browse from the selection of Aquatic shops listed here for further information.
